General Information

Mistletoe, a semiparasitic plant, holds interest as a potential anticancer agent because extracts derived from it have been shown to kill cancer cells in vitro [1-15] Reviewed in [16,17] and to stimulate immune system cells both in vitro and in vivo. [18-48] Reviewed in [17,49-60] Two components of mistletoe, namely viscotoxins and lectins, may be responsible for these effects.[1,4,7,9-11,13,24,26-28,30-33,35,36,38-42,46-48,61-63] Reviewed in [16,17,43,49-52,54-59,64-67] Viscotoxins are small proteins that exhibit cell-killing activity and possible immune-system–stimulating activity.[7,13,47,48] Reviewed in [50,64]

Lectins are complex molecules made of both protein and carbohydrates that are capable of binding to the outside of cells (for example, immune system cells) and inducing biochemical changes in them. Reviewed in [17,51,56,68-71] In view of mistletoe’s ability to stimulate the immune system, it has been classified as a type of biological response modifier. Reviewed in [51] Biological response modifiers constitute a diverse group of biological molecules that have been used individually, or in combination with other agents, to treat cancer or to lessen the side effects of anticancer drugs.

Iscador and cancer therapy

Mistletoe Mistletoe has been used as a medicinal plant since ancient times. It was Rudolf Steiner who first suggested it for cancer treatment in the early 1920's. In the meantime, the use of mistletoe has increased enormously. Nowadays many cancer patients worldwide and particularly in Germany use mistletoe in some form - sometimes as the primary medicine and frequently in conjunction with other methods such as radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. An extract from the whole mistletoe plant contains various lectins (the main ones being ML1-3), numerous viscotoxins, and more. In vitro test tube experiments with these two groups of substances indicate that they have an inhibiting or lethal effect on cancer cells.

Mistletoe therapy has been used in Germany and Switzerland in the treatment of cancer for over eighty years. To date, about 30,000 patients have been treated with mistletoe at the Lukas Clinic in Arlesheim, Switzerland. About half of the physicians practicing in Germany now use mistletoe as adjunct therapy, and their numbers continue to increase. Many studies have tracked the good results experienced by patients (in vivo) that confirm the anti-tumor effects found in test tubes.
Besides its effects on the actual tumor, mistletoe has other positive aspects, from which an integrative approach to cancer treatment can benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can Iscador be administered at the same time as chemotherapy?
A: Treatment with Iscador can and should be administered during chemotherapy, since the latter causes a decrease in the white blood cell count. Generally, tolerance to chemotherapy is improved by simultaneous treatment with Iscador.

Q: Which types of tumors react well to Iscador?
A: Studies show a significant increase in patient survival time with treatment of Iscador in various stages of cervical, ovarian, vaginal, mammary, stomach, bronchial, and other carcinomas, all of which indicate the efficacy of Iscador treatment.

Q: Can therapy with Iscador be combined with chemotherapy, hormone therapy or radiation
A: In my opinion, Iscador therapy should always be carried out in conjunction with chemotherapy, radiation, or other conventional cancer treatments. During chemotherapy, the immune competence of the organism is radically reduced. Administering Iscador can provide a positive, balancing effect, which will stabilize the leucocytes. This means that chemotherapy, if necessary, can be carried out with success, and without doing greater damage to the immune system than necessary. Therapy with Iscador can often prevent the interruption of chemotherapy due to leukopenia.

Q: What methods of alternative therapy can be used in conjunction with Iscador?
A: So-called alternative treatments are manifold, ranging from treatment with enzyme preparations, vitamin preparations and trace elements, to ozone therapy, various kinds of blood cleansings and many alleged immune-stimulating methods. It is important to know that mistletoe therapy is not an alternative therapy, but is included within the framework of an anthroposophically extended therapy.

Weleda Iscador® preparations are extracted from the mistletoe plant and are becoming increasingly known and accepted in Europe for their valuable contribution to cancer therapy. Patients often find that these can help in complementary ways to conventional or other alternative medicines.
Iscador® is an extract in water from the mistletoe plant. Mistletoe grows on many different types of tree such as Pine (Pini-Iscador P), Oak (Quercus-Iscador Qu) and Apple (Mali-Iscador M). It has been found that different types of illnesses respond better to mistletoe from specific host trees, so for example mistletoe from pine trees, Iscador P may be used for skin cancer.
Your doctor will normally prescribe a course of Iscador® of increasing strength. Your doctor or nurse may also ask you to monitor your temperature, actually looking for a small rise after the application. This passes within a few hours and is beneficial, indicating that your immune system is responding to the Iscador®. Once you have found the Iscador® strength that achieves this temperature rise you may be asked to continue on maintenance therapy using this same strength of Iscador®.
There are very few side-effects from Iscador® and it can be used in conjunction with other medications where other medical conditions are present.
Weleda Iscador® is available in boxes of 7 ampules. In the U.S. it is registered as a homeopathic medicine under the trade name of Iscar®.
